Blended Red Wine

Capaia One Wine Review: Is this the best South African Wine so Far? (Episode 422)

We taste and review Capaia One a blended South African wine made just north of Cape Town.

This wine was kindly donated to us by Rick the branch manager of Majestic Wine in Huddersfield.

You may notice in the video that the captions are at odds with what John L says are the grapes that go to blend this wonderful wine.

John L was stating the blend based on what Majestic’s website stated, however, the captions depict what the wine maker’s website suggests.

The winemaker also owns two Grand Cru Classe Saint-Emilion estates and so is obviously used to producing quality wines.

This wine is produced just a short distance north of Cape Town, it benefits from being basked in a suntrap sheltered by the Koeberg Hills while at the same time being cooled by the Atlantic Ocean breezes.

This allows the grapes to ripen slowly helping to produce the concentrated flavours experienced in this wine.

The colour of the wine has a tawny hue to it suggesting one might be about to experience a little bit of class!

On the nose you do not have to work very hard to get its full impact, the nose is quite reminiscent of Rioja with it’s oak overtures and leather hints.

On the palate, the first thing John L noticed was how pleasant the mouthfeel of the wine was.

In terms of taste after the oak and leather which were detected on the nose came the taste of strawberry.

The tannins are incredibly soft and beautifully balanced.

John M felt this was one of the best wines we have reviewed.
