Gin and Tonic

Masham Rhubarb Gin (Episode 185 Part 4)

In the last part of this episode, we taste the Masham Rhubarb Gin.

The main ingredient of this gin is, of course, Rhubarb, but it also has some Rose and Ginger botanicals included which sound s like a great combination.

The colour was very vibrant, almost luminous!

This Gin is 42% ABV unlike some of the flavoured gins where the ABV can be as low 20%.

John L thought the gin smelt like stewed rhubarb prepared for Rhubarb pie and he could also just detect the ginger too.

The taste was terrific coming in several waves of full-on Rhubarb, then Rose and then the ginger taste comes through.

When drunk neat there is absolutely no alcohol bite.

For both us, when we added the tonic, it made the drink just too sweet for our taste, making this a drink that we would prefer neat.

Whittaker’s Summer Solstice Gin (Episode 193)

In this episode, we taste Whittaker’s Summer Solstice gin.

On the nose, the grapefruit comes through and on the tongue, the taste is quite forceful.

The alcohol may be hiding some of the taste when drunk neat and when tasted with tonic the grapefruit smell seemed to have morphed into tangerines.

We both prefered this gin with tonic, making it smoother and the tonic brought out the tangerines taste together with making the gin “juicier” made the drink.

This is a great summer G&T!

Agnus Arber Gin (Episode 191)

In this episode of Gin Fun, we taste a wine named after Angnus Arber who im1948 became the first woman to win the linden Society Gold Medal. Agnus died in 1960 having produced an extensive library of books on both botany and philosophy.

It is with this appreciation of Agnus’s work that the creators of this the Agnus Arber Gin created their gin.

The nine botanicals used to create this gin are: –

Juniper
Angelica
Cassia
Coriander
Grapefruit
Iris
Lemon
Liquorice
Orange

John felt that some of the flavours mixed together to form a mushroom type taste.

There are lots of different tastes going on in this gin and which makes it very interesting to taste neat.

With tonic added the taste seem to be flattened to just the Orange and Junipers flavours – so for us, this one should be enjoyed neat!

Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin (Episode 189)

In this episode, we taste a Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin.

On the nose, the gin smells very minty and very delicate on the taste.

With tonic, the taste continues to be very delicate, so ideal for those of you that don’t like that big dry juniper taste this gin will probably suit you.

Masham Chocolate Malt Barley (Episode 185 Part 3)

We were privileged and excited to be joined by another YouTuber – Annabell from the WineScribble channel.

Take a look at Annabell’s fantastic channel at WineScribble

Whilst in the UK Annabell honoured with a visit to our cellar and we took the opportunity to invite Annabell to taste to some craft gin from the Masham Distillery.

The gin we were tasting was Masham Gin Distillery Chocolate Barley Gin. The gin gets it’s name from the barley which has been roasted causing it’s “skin” to go a chocolate colour.

This is another fantastic unique gin from the Masham Gin Distillery stable and if you like subtle and unique flavours this gin is the way to go. Like all of Mashams gins this gin is smooth, rounded and even at 42% allows you to taste the different flavours that all go to make up it’s complexity.

In fact, all three of us preferred drinking it neat, as whilst obviously, the tonic made it into a long drink, but the tonic masked some of the flavours.

Even Annabell was impressed!

Masham Masla Chia Gin (Episode 185 Part 2)

In this episode, John and I taste another fantastic gin from the Spirit of Masham Distillery. This time we taste the first gin ever developed by them, their Masala Chia Gin. This gin really is unique and separates itself from the rest of the market because of it’s unique flavour profile.

It’s tastes are soft and rounded even though it is 42% ABV meaning it can easily be enjoyed neat with maybe a chunk or two of ice.

If you are looking for something different this is the gin to try.

In the video we cover the flavours that we can uncover, but can you detect any others – let us know via the comments box or via email.

Masham Classic Gin Review (Episode 185 Part 1)

Following on from John L’s visit to Masham Gin distillery and his interview with Derek, the two Johns settle down in the cellar to taste the Masham Gin’s Classic Gin.

This is a very smooth and subtly different from other craft gins we have tasted – what can we say, a brilliant gin.

With tonic added the drink has a wonderful effect of you first tasting the tonic and then the gin taste follows on later almost as if you have sipped two separate drinks one after the other.

Cumberland Saucy Gin (Episode 182)

We taste the Cumberland Saucy Gin.

The gin is a full-on gin which bites back with alcohol burn even though on the nose there was no suggestion of how strong it would taste.

However, after a few sips, the effect dies down enabling you to enjoy the taste more.

Although the gin has a very sweet smell that doesn’t come through when tasting.

We both enjoyed the gin more when the tonic was added, which seemed to allow the taste of the orange peel to shine through.

Yorkshire Dales Distillery (Episode 150)

This episode is about not one, but three fantastic Gins, all of which have shot into John L’s top 10. (It used to be top 5, but it seemed too difficult with the introduction of these three gins to determine the top 5!)

We discuss with Tony how he and his wife, Sarah, got into gin, what drove him to start his fantastic distillery and his goal of creating world-class spirit and providing employment for veterans, young people and ex-cons.

During the interview, Tony takes me through a tasting experience and then at the end of the interview I hot foot it back to the Cellar for John M to taste and give his opinion!

Let us know what you think of the interview and if you get to try the gin what you think of it.

Crafty Fox Gin (Episode146)

In this episode, we taste a gin that has only just been launched! It is distilled in a village that has been made famous as the village where the current Dr Who was brought up!

Produced by a young couple the gin is distilled with a lot of love and passion.

The taste is very unique and delicious, nice peppery taste with citrus overtones.

With the tonic added the sweet taste still came through. This gin makes a top class Gin and Tonic.
