Wine information for beginners

3 Ases Tempranillo (Episode 158)

In this episode, we taste an excellent Tempranillo called 3 Ases which is available from John’s shop Czwericks.

It has a fantastic blackcurrant aroma which is really powerful and great to “sniff at”!

Blackcurrant and a hint of vanilla on the palate with a great length. It is a great wine with a good deal of complexity.

We discuss how we think this wine would pair fantastically with Iberico Ham – the wine which costs £22.00 would need to be appreciated to it’s full and savoured over an evening, cheaper than a trip to the cinema and in my book far more enjoyable.

Just to clarify the discussion we had with regards to the length of time different classification mean the wine has been in a barrel and in the bottle her is a guide: –

Crianza:

A wine labelled Crianza has spent one year in oak barrels.

Reserva:

A wine that says Reserva on the bottle has been aged for two years; one of these years has to have been spent in oak.

Gran Reserva:

These wines are aged for two years in oak and three years in the bottle.

Grillo Wine (Sparkling) – Episode 155

In this episode, we taste a bottle of Sparkling Grillo wine available from Aldi.

It has a nice “Verde” type colour with a sweet aroma of pear.

The taste was “very lively” with a lovely “sherberty” taste to it.

It was low on the acidity that many other sparkling wines suffer from.

A very fresh and well-balanced wine for £7.99.

A fantastic price for great sparkling wine!

Argentine vs Chilean Malbec (Episode 152)

In this episode, we compare an Argentine vs a Chilean Malbec wine.

In the first part of this video, we taste the Argentine Malbec which we are pleasantly surprised with the taste of this Malbec. Cherry and leather were the first two tastes John and John experienced. It had everything you would expect from a Malbec.

This Malbec is available from Aldi at £7.99 this wine is very good value.

The next Malbec wine we tasted is also available from Aldi.

On the nose, black cherry, but whilst you immediately get a full on taste that quickly disappears.

In John M’s view, it lacked complexity.

Asda Moneda Chilean Merlot (Episode 147)

In this episode, we taste a Chilean Merlot available from Asda at £5.00 per bottle.

This wine is really fruity, low on tannin – really tasty!

The only downside with this wine is that it does not have much length, but for this price, there is no way one can complain!

Chianti Sangiovese (Episode 140 Part 2)

In this 2nd part of our Sangiovese, we taste two more Sangiovese wines but this time Chiantis, that red wine made so famous by Dr Hannibal Lecter played by Anthony Hopkins in the film Silence of the Lambs.

The first Chianti we try comes across very light when “sniffed” but had a great taste of cherry, but the taste had very little length. a great table wine to enjoy with food or as a quaffing wine.

The second Chianti had a little splash of Cabernet Sauvignon as well which John hoped will add a little bit more fruit. On the nose, the 2nd wine had obvious notes of leather and oak. The taste was, John felt, one dimensional. John L prefered this wine to the first although accepted the length was a little lacking.

What another great wine to serve it’s upper-class passengers.

Especially when you consider that it effectively has Royal approval, being served at Windsor Castle to toast Harry & Megan at their wedding reception!

In this episode, we taste some wines that are served on Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy and Upper-Class cabins.

We start off in this part of the episode, by tasting a Sauvignon
Blanc served in the Premium Economy Cabin.
