Greek Wines (Episode 172)

Grigoris discusses the hundreds of years of wine history there is in Greece.
Surprisingly two-thirds of the wine produced in Greece is white wine because 79% of the Greek landmass is mountainous.

Tasting a Family wine form Corfu (Episode 62)

In this Episode, we taste a homemade wine produced in Kavos, Corfu – Greece.

One of John’s colleagues had just been on holiday and dined regularly at the Roussos Restuarant in Kavas where the owner, George, kindly provided him with a bottle for the two John’s to taste.

The wine’s nose or smell was very delicate, but the taste had much more going on. One could immediately tell that this was a wine to enjoy on a hot summers day in Corfu, it was refreshing and left you wanting more!

Tasting a Fantastic Greek Red Wine (Episode 56 Part 3)

In the last part of this Episode, we taste a Red Wine from Domaine Sigalas.

And what a Powerful beast this turned out to be!

Made 100% from the Mavrotragano grape, which until recently was under threat of extinction. This grape has now however become popular with new plantings.

This red has been aged in new Oak barrels for around 18 months and once again if you can keep your hands off of it has unlimited ageing potential.

Tasting a Sweet White Wine from the Greek Island of Santorini (Episode 56 Part 2)

In Part 2 we taste a fantastic sweet wine from the Domaine Sigalas vineyards and “what a beaut” it is!

This wine is made from 75% Assytriko and 25% Aidani grapes which are sun dried for 10 – 12 days and then the wine is aged in old oak barrels for a minimum of 24 months.

The island the vines are grown on, Santorini is a volcanic island named after its volcano – Santo Erini – and thus the wine is named after it’s place of origin – Vinsanto.

The name is a “historical name of appellation” one of the few still in existence.

To top it all, if you can resist drinking it straight away, it’s ageing potential is unlimited.

Tasting a Fantastic White Wine from the Greek Island of Santorini (Episode 56 Part 1)

In this first part of our Episode, we taste a fantastic white wine from the Domaine Sigalas Vineyard.

The wine is made 100% from the Assyrtiko grape and what a full on refreshing powerful white wine it is too.

Episode 56 Part 1


Introduction to Wines from Domaine Sigalas (Episode 56 Introduction)

In this episode, we have the pleasure tasting some wines from the island of Santorini which itself is part of a group of islands called the Cyclades.

Located in the South Aegean Sea the island is only 1,400 hectares, with terraces that rise up to between 150m to 250m above sea level
Vineyards in the region were known to exist since the 17 century BC, but were destroyed by a volcano eruption around 1620 BC
The island was re-inhabited around 1200 BC when they started making wine again thus making this area a wine making area for some 3,000+ years.

Many of the wines on the island are over 50 years old.

The family vineyard that we are tasting the wine from during this Episode was called the Sigalas Winery when founded in 1991.

The vineyard has expanded since 1991 and now produces and bottles up to 300,000 bottles per year and is now called Domaine Sigalas.
