Tesco’s Cote du Rhone (Episode 221 Part 5)

We continue our episode on budget wines from supermarkets.

This part of the episode we review Tesco’s own brand Cote du Rhone for the fantastic price of £4.50.

The colour was spot on for a Cote du Rhone.

On the nose (smell) there was raspberry and vanilla.

The taste was surprisingly good for the price, especially as French wine tends to be more expensive than other country’s wines.

A fantastic value everyday wine.

The length is also surprisingly good.

Sainsburys House Claret (Episode 221 – Part 3)

In this episode, we try to find some good quality wines for under or around the £6 mark which are freely available in UK Supermarkets.

In the second part of this episode, we taste Sainsbury’s House Claret wine which is a name typically the British give to Bourdeaux wines.

French wines, as we often mentioned, because of the high-quality reputation, tend to be priced higher than wines from other countries, so the price of this wine at £5.00 is even more remarkable.

To the sight, the wine looks a very deep ruby and looks to have more viscosity than the previous wine we had just tasted in Part 2 (Kourtaki’s Retsina)

On the nose, the aroma is very distinctive of French wine, it has blackcurrant, spice and even strawberry!

On the palette, we were very pleasantly surprised, for the price point for a French wine we were fearing the taste would be wanting but this wine far exceeded our expectations.

The fruit flavour came first through, to begin with, followed by the tannins at the end which just last for a very short burst.

There is hardly any length, but for a quaffable wine, this is excellent value!

Sarah Abbott Master of Wine -Talks about Georgian Wines (Episode 166)

Sarah Abbott is one of only 382 Masters of Wine in the world and so is perfectly qualified to talk about the Georgian wines that are just beginning to break into the western markets.

Sarah informs us that Georgia is, based on archaeological findings, the oldest area where wine was deliberately made over 8,000 years ago.

Sarah then goes on to explain the great wines and grapes of Georgia, which currently are under the region. She also highlights several grape varietals you should try from Georgia during our interview.

Sarah makes Georgia sound like a must-visit place for the foodie as well as the wine lover. In fact, Lonely Planet has highlighted Georgia as one of it’s hottest new places to visit.

Our thanks to Sarah for taking the time out to speak to us in and amongst her very busy schedule at the 2019 London Wine Festival.
