Casaboa Reserva (Episode 201 – Part 2)

In this episode, we taste a wonderful wine kindly dispatched to us by Lusus wines.

Lusus wines only import and sell great Portuguese wines and this is certainly one of them!

This wine comes from the Quinta Da Casaboa vineyard and our interview with their lovely General Manager can be seen at https://youtu.be/5yHJ1regwkw

This particular wine is produced in homage to Joanna’s Grandfather, and only the best grapes are used to produce this wine.

If due to a particular year’s weather the grapes don’t meet exacting standards the vineyard does not produce a “Reserva” that year.

A great aroma of cherries and blackcurrants, with John M getting notes of marzipan while John L was getting notes of vanilla.

The taste was beautiful and did not disappoint with blackcurrant and black cherry tastes to the fore with a great mouthfeel.

The wine has a very velvety or creamy feel.

We could both detect a hint of oak flavour.

John M describes drinking this wine as not just tasting but an experience.

At the time of writing this wine has proved so popular that Lusus had already run out of stock so we are unable to give you a link to the page devoted just to this wine, but the good news is more is on the way and this page should lead you to the details once the wine has arrived from Sunny Portugal!

Herdade Dos Grous – Wine from Portugals Alentejano Region (Episode 213)

In this episode, we taste yet another fantastic Portuguese red wine, I don’t think we have found a bad wine from Portugual in all the wines Portuguese wines we have reviewed so far.

This wine is so well balanced it is really difficult to distinguish one particular fruit or dominate the flavour.

Herdade dos Grous Tinto

 

Grape varieties

Alicante Bouschet (30%)

Syrah (15,5%)

Touriga Nacional (20%)

Aragonez (35%)

Vinification

The hand-picked grapes are de-stemmed and then cooled down through thermal shock to 10°C.

After two days of cold maceration the wine ferments in small steel tanks.

The maturing takes place in new barrique barrels made from French oak.

Serving We recommend serving this wine with roast beef, chicken curry or spaghetti bolognese.

Ideal serving temperature is 14 to 16°C.

 

Barrique Barrels in case you are wondering is the name given to a particular shape and capacity of barrel.

A Barrique Barrell has a 225 litre or 59-gallon capacity.

The size, as in many things, is important as the smaller the barrel the more contact the wine has with the wood or oak.

A barrique barrel being much smaller than a hogshead barrel for instance that has a capacity of 300 litres or 79 gallons.

Ervideira Vineyard – Interview (Episode 196 Part 3)

In this part of the episode, we visit the Ervideira vineyard and talk to one of the owners who is the vineyard’s winemaker.

He begins by explaining the history of his family’s vineyard – he is one of the fourth generation now running the vineyard.

They have a fantastic range of 25 wines which are all top-flight – they focus on quality rather than volume.

They also have quirky wines such as the 30,000 bottles wines that are stored underwater at a depth of around 30m in Portugal’s and Europes largest lake which, when you compare to exactly the same wine stored above water, taste significantly different.
