Arabella 10th Anniversary Wine (Episode 153)

Drinking a wine one evening John L thought John M would enjoy so he thought he would seek Joh M’s view on the wine,

The wine was produced to celebrate the vineyards 10th year.

Argentine vs Chilean Malbec (Episode 152)

In this episode, we compare an Argentine vs a Chilean Malbec wine.

In the first part of this video, we taste the Argentine Malbec which we are pleasantly surprised with the taste of this Malbec. Cherry and leather were the first two tastes John and John experienced. It had everything you would expect from a Malbec.

This Malbec is available from Aldi at £7.99 this wine is very good value.

The next Malbec wine we tasted is also available from Aldi.

On the nose, black cherry, but whilst you immediately get a full on taste that quickly disappears.

In John M’s view, it lacked complexity.

BeefSteak South African Wellington Malbec (Episode 151)

In this episode, we taste a South African Malbec from the BeefSteak Stable of wines selected for their compatibility with, you guessed it, Steak!

This wine has a very promising nose but whilst a very nice wine, it doesn’t have that wow factor. It has a great instant taste but is disappointing in terms of the length or put another way time that the tastes lasts.

Yorkshire Dales Distillery (Episode 150)

This episode is about not one, but three fantastic Gins, all of which have shot into John L’s top 10. (It used to be top 5, but it seemed too difficult with the introduction of these three gins to determine the top 5!)

We discuss with Tony how he and his wife, Sarah, got into gin, what drove him to start his fantastic distillery and his goal of creating world-class spirit and providing employment for veterans, young people and ex-cons.

During the interview, Tony takes me through a tasting experience and then at the end of the interview I hot foot it back to the Cellar for John M to taste and give his opinion!

Let us know what you think of the interview and if you get to try the gin what you think of it.

Ribera del Duero Tempranillo (Episode 149)

We taste a wine, Condado De Haza made from the Tempranillo grape from the Riber del Duero Region of Spain. Just south of the Rioja region which also uses a lot of Tempranillo in the creation of it’s world famous wines.

There are of course a lot of similarities between this wine and the wines from Rioja, which would make it difficult for the beginner to discern the difference.

It is a great wine and well worth a try, available from Sainsburys at £15.00 per bottle as well as other retailers.

King Billy Gin (Episode 148)

In this episode, we taste some gin distilled in Hull, East Yorkshire.

Named after the famous English King William III or William of Orange as he was also known.

John M prefered the gin neat whilst John L preferred it with tonic.

We taste it neat, with a light tonic and a ginger ale which is recommended by the distiller.

The ginger ale sweetened the gin considerably, and the ginger really added to the peppery taste and for those with a sweeter tooth this would probably be ideal, however for John L with normal tonic was best and for John M neat west was best!

The point is that this gin is really flexible depending on the tonic you use and you will, with the right choice of tonic, find this gin will be ideal for you!

Asda Moneda Chilean Merlot (Episode 147)

In this episode, we taste a Chilean Merlot available from Asda at £5.00 per bottle.

This wine is really fruity, low on tannin – really tasty!

The only downside with this wine is that it does not have much length, but for this price, there is no way one can complain!

Crafty Fox Gin (Episode146)

In this episode, we taste a gin that has only just been launched! It is distilled in a village that has been made famous as the village where the current Dr Who was brought up!

Produced by a young couple the gin is distilled with a lot of love and passion.

The taste is very unique and delicious, nice peppery taste with citrus overtones.

With the tonic added the sweet taste still came through. This gin makes a top class Gin and Tonic.

Supermarket Argentine Malbecs (Episode 145)

In this episode, we taste yet another Malbec from Argentina. This time we taste two supermarket’s Argentinean Malbecs – one from Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference and the other from Tesco’s Finest range.

The first one tasted was Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference – when we first “sniffed” this particular Malbec it didn’t give up much, but on the taste, it was much better. Blackberries and great balance with the tannins.

Whilst the colour wasn’t quite as vibrant and the “sniff” was very similar to Sainsbury’s it too surprised us with how good the balance of this wine was. Great Balance more red fruits than the Sainsbury’s Malbec but just as well balanced on the tannins as Sainsbury’s.
